Organic Hair Products vs. Regular

ORGANIC HAIR PRODUCTS vs REGULAR

By: Cameo Heun

For some people, organic is life. For others, organic is the small section in the produce aisle where the prices are suddenly 50 times higher than the seemingly identical fruit in the non-organic section.

For your hair, though, it’s something to seriously consider. Although a case could be made for why regular shampoos are the way to go (they’re often cheaper than the organic option, and they’re always readily available in most stores), the cons definitely outweigh the pros. Without totally freaking you out; more than 50% of what you apply to your skin gets absorbed into your body. With this in mind, you might want to think twice before you massage “ammonium laurel sulphate”, “sodium laureate sulphate”, “polyethylene glycol” and other things we can’t pronounce into your scalp. Not to mention a lot of the harsh chemical ingredients in non-organic shampoos have actually been associated with causing cancer and other not-so-nice health conditions, not to mention baldness, premature greying and hair loss.

Here’s a list of just a few of the most common regular shampoo ingredients, including those mentioned above:

Ammonium laurel sulphate & sodium laureate sulphate: These are harsh detergents used for their “foaming” properties, but they strip your hair of the natural oils that it needs to stay healthy, which in turn halts it’s growth.
Polyethylene Glycol: This is a thickening agent that strips hair and skin of it’s natural moisture.
Parbens: A chemical used to prolong shelf life, but it’s a common skin irritant and constant exposure to certain parabens is known to affect your hormonal balance which can cause hair loss.
Propylene Glycol. Also known as antifreeze. Propylene Glycol is a common ingredient in shampoos, used to keep the product from freezing during shipping and storage. It goes without saying that it can irritate skin, and cause allergic reactions.

Now, hopefully we haven’t scared you into never washing your hair again. The other side of the coin, organic shampoos and conditioners, are much more appealing and much less scary. At Trim Hair Salon, we love love love the brands Intelligent Nutrients, and Natulique.

Intelligent Nutrients promises no parabens, no silicones, no chemical sulphates, and no synthetic fragrances. Not only are all of their hair products  gluten free, vegan, and never animal tested, they contain amazing anti-aging antioxidants and 100% all natural ingredients. So natural in fact, that most of the ingredients they use are food grade! I’d rather wash my hair with something I can eat than with antifreeze. Take for example their Harmonic Shampoo. It’s completely ideal for every hair type and works naturally to cleanse and purify your hair, scalp and body. Did I mention it’s also a volumizing shampoo? It’s the full package, without any of the nasty chemicals.HC_HARMONIC-SHAMPOO_15OZ

Natulique, just like Intelligent Nutrients, is completely natural and organic. Here’s an excerpt from their website: “Our ingredients are certified by ECOCERT and derived from organic and ecological plant extracts. Gently conditions all hair types. Features a rich, energizing lather that leaves the hair feeling revived and renewed. Added Sesame Seed Oil and Shea Butter maintain and soften the hair on a daily basis to always ensure beautiful and natural looking shiny hair.” Again, I’d choose this over antifreeze.nl5844

Not only will your body, scalp and hair thank you for switching to organic shampoos, so will the PLANET; all these amazing natural ingredients are also biodegradable. We are proud to carry both of these organic hair care lines at Trim Salon, so come by and check them out and feel free to ask any of our stylists any questions you may still have, we are happy to help.

Happy Shampooing!

The 2015 Wrap-Up

THE 2015 WRAP-UP.

By: Cameo Heun

2016. It’s here! With the New Year comes New Year’s Resolutions, post-holiday diets, the hope of spring, and of course, new trends. Clothes, nails, makeup, and HAIR! Out with the old and in with the new.

What if we’re not quite ready to let go of 2015 quite yet? We’ve compiled a list of  our favorite hair trends of this year with some easy tutorials so you can give these styles one last goodbye at your year-end & holiday parties!

Look no. 1: The Half up Half Down Top Knot. Jennifer Lopez rocks this look, (but so does your 6 year old niece) here’s how to rock the Top Knot without looking too young.

  1. Separate the top half of your hair from the bottom with a hair tie. Make a ponytail and tie it tight!
  2. For extra volume, tease the base of the ponytail closest to the hair tie.
  3. Twist your teased pony around the base, and secure with a bobby pin.
  4. Hairspray!

Look no. 2: The Blunt Bob. This is such a great look because of its versatility. Wear it styled straight, add some loose beachy waves or just tease and tousle it and leave it messy. We saw this on Kiera Knightly, Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway and so many more.

  1. First step is to chop it off! This hairstyle looks great at a range of lengths from right at your chin line, down to above your shoulder – depending on your level of commitment and confidence.

STRAIGHT:

1. Before adding heat, make sure you protect your hair using a straightening serum like the Aveda Smooth Infusion.

2. In sections, straighten your bob.

3. Apply a light hairspray like the Aveda Air Control Hairspray, it’ll give you stability with a light, workable hold.

LOOSE WAVES:

1. Separate your hair in 2 sections, top and bottom. Using a 1.5 inch curling iron, curl your hair on a 45 degree downward angle, curling away from your face. If you’re using a curling iron with a clamp, leave the clamp open and just wrap the hair around the wand. Hold for 10 seconds and release hair.

2. Curl both top and bottom sections of hair, and gently comb out the curls.

MESSY: (this look works best on unwashed hair, because we want to load it with dry shampoo to add texture)

1. Spray the dry shampoo 5 inches away from roots and let it sit for a second before brushing it through.

2. Separate the top of your hair from the bottom, and with a comb, lightly tease the roots of the underside.

3. Release the top half of your hair, give it a shake with your hands and a shot of a light hairspray and you’re good to go! c682892a415b3348a819ae41b5206fe0-1ea198b4304909f31a7888a931e9bd741

Look no. 3: Last but not least, and surely to be a winner at any holiday party, is the sexy slicked back look.

1. Before blowdrying your hair, spray it with a texture spray like the Pure Abundance Style Prep by Aveda, and blow dry your hair away from your face, towards the back of your head.

2. Pin the sides of your hair using a creaseless clip.

3. Once your hair is in place and secure, use a flat iron to smooth the sides and top of your hair, adding a smoothing oil as you go.

4. Once straight, tease the hair at the top of your head to create volume.

5. Using a texture paste like the Light Elements Shaping Wax by Aveda, shape mold the top of your hair to create desired height and volume, and using a fine tooth comb, smooth over the top.

6. Finish the look with a strong hold hairspray.her-hair-slicked-back-Rosie-Huntington-Whiteley-bright-red

We can’t wait to see what 2016 holds for us in the hair world, but while we wait, we can use this time to bid hair-well to the trends we loved in 2015. We hope you love these looks as much as we do, and of course – if you need any help with your holiday hairstyles come by the salon and we’ll be happy to help!
